Your animals are part of the family, and leaving them behind can cause emotional distress – for you and your pet. So, many opt to take their pets along for the ride. RVing with pets can be an incredible experience – as long as you do it right. Here are our top tips for RVing with pets.
Pre-Trip Preparations
Before hitting the road, take these preparatory steps to ensure a smooth journey.
1. Veterinary Check-up:
Schedule a visit to the vet for a thorough check-up, and to get any needed vaccinations or medications to ensure your pets are healthy and fit to travel.
2. Microchipping and Identification:
Update your pets’ microchip information and attach visible identification tags to their collars. On the off chance they they wander off or get lost, you’ll thank yourself.
3. Familiarize Your Pet With Your Trailer:
In the weeks leading up to your trip, get your pet familiar with the inside of your RV. Start with small walkthroughs and treats, then maybe hang out with them in the trailer for more extended periods (i.e.: set up in your RV to watch a movie, rather than relaxing in your home’s livingroom). Finally, serve up your pet’s meals in the RV in the days before leaving, so that they feel as comfortable and provided-for as possible in that space. If your pet is particularly nervous, you can even do a test-night, staying in your RV overnight with your pet before actually leaving on your journey.
